Established in June 1985 as part of TIH (Telesure Investment Holdings), this proudly South African company has made its mark globally.

Some of our milestones

  • Placed first and second in South Africa for percentage growth by the Financial Mail and highly commended in various editions of the “Top Companies” survey.
  • International establishment of similar operations in the UK and Australia.
  • Launched MyPolicy, an online facility that allows policyholders to manage their motor and household insurance portfolios online, in their own time.
  • Following the devastating fires that wreaked havoc on the Southern Cape, Auto & General settled all claims quickly, including 20% more in a week than in all of 2016. We also provided 24-hour personal assistance and free trauma counselling to all affected customers.

Partnership journey

We have built strong relationships with our brokers, small and large, who play a pivotal role in the growth of our business. With the addition of Business Insurance to our product suite in 2005, broker business was given a boost.  Since then, we have continued to grow and maintain a robust broker network.  Likewise, our longstanding partnership with various South African businesses provides both positive results for our business and peace of mind for our customers.

The Dieplsloot Foundation

The Diepsloot Foundation is a Section 21 Company focusing on the empowerment and upliftment of the Diepsloot community through various educational, artisanal skills, enterprise- and supplier development programmes.

Dieplsloot Food Security Programme

A social enterprise that provides Diepsloot residents with the necessary infrastructure, training and support to start and manage micro agri-businesses. In 2021 the initiative provided 61 954 meals to 2 180 children in ECD centres within Diepsloot.

Leap Science and Maths Schools

LEAP provides student-centred Maths and Science-focused education to economically disadvantaged students from grades 8 to 12. In January 2022, LEAP celebrated brilliant grade 12 results with a 100% pass rate in the NSC examinations.

The OLICO Maths Foundation

Auto & General’s grant facilitates maths clubs that are designed to improve the core strands of maths proficiency: procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and disposition toward maths.

67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day

Launched by Carolyn Steyn, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day is a “Knitting Revolution for Nelson Mandela” that has become an integral part of the employee volunteering culture at Auto & General, pledging to keep thousands of people less fortunate than ourselves warmer in winter.

Commitment to transformation

We remain  committed to South Africa’s ongoing transformation efforts  and have embarked on several projects to support this, which include:

  • a leadership programme for previously disadvantaged individuals, which allows for successful candidates who complete their training to be considered for permanent employment.
  • an accelerated management development programme to increase our ability to fill management positions with transformation candidates.

Short term insurance and new business

The growing SME market prompted the launch of Auto & General’s Business Insurance product. We are confident that it will not only meet, but even exceed the needs and expectations of this growing market.
